Digging to Antiquity

Go straight to the annotated map.

This is a study of the temporal and "platial" characteristics of the archaeological excavations at Chersonesos. Sites on the map have been assigned temporal tags according to year of excavation. In cases where the excavation date is unknown I have plugged in the year of the itinerary on which they first appear. Drag the timeline forward and backward to explore the chronology of excavation work.

The "Master Plan" map was produced by the Institute of Classical Archaeology (University of Texas) as part of the documentation qualifying Chersonesos as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Data has been drawn from a selection of excursion itineraries published in 1928, 1958, 1962 and 2002 as well as Minns' famous volume Scythians and Greeks (1913). This is, clearly, just a small sampling of available sources.
