The David Rumsey Historical Map Collection is a rich source for historical maps of Crimea and the Black Sea. The links below will bring you to viewing pages within the Beautiful Spaces site. In each case you can "Go to Source" on the Rumsey site by clicking the link in the upper right of the display.

If you have or create a Luna Browser account (see the Rumsey site) you will be able to save any annotations you make. The annotation tool will activate along with the zoom tool when you interact with the maps.

Note: David Rumsey very graciously gave permission to embed his maps in this site. It is true that linking to maps held elsewhere violates the philosophy of the Beautiful Spaces project, which emphasizes curation and internal coherence over comprehensiveness. However, the Rumsey collection is so thoroughly documented and so elegantly presented - the map viewer is probably the best I've seen - that it would be redundant to recreate the maps as Items within this site. The maps are listed in chronological order.

Russiae, Moscoviae Et Tartariae (Abraham Ortelius, 1570)

Taurica Chersonesus (Mercator, 1607)

Verus Chersonesi Tauricae Seu Crimeae Conspectus (Joseph Nicolas de L'Isle, 1737)

Carte Reduite de la Mer Noire (Jacques Bellin, 1772)

Krym Halbinsel (Carl Radefeld, 1856)
